About

The Center for Coalfield Justice in Greene County, PA is seeking 1-2 students for the 2020 IAP period to work directly with communities on the frontlines of fossil fuel extraction. The paid internship will involve assisting our community-rooted organizers in producing resources that educate residents on the economic transition paths of other communities whose local economies have been dependent on fossil fuel extraction. Interns will have the opportunity to build upon previous MIT students’ research, tour the coalfields and work directly with impacted residents. The coalfields of Southwestern Pennsylvania are undergoing continued extraction, though depleting, all alongside increased oil and gas and petrochemical development. Through this internship, students interested in environmental justice can learn from those that are organizing from the frontlines.  To learn more about The Center for Coalfield Justice, visit the CCJ website https://www.coalfieldjustice.org/

From a previous intern: "
Interning at CCJ was a great opportunity to learn first-hand about the challenges facing the communities in the coalfields of Pennsylvania. The work I did as an intern was meaningful and fit within CCJ’s mission of advocacy. Every interaction I had, whether with CCJ staff or community members, taught me something new about the region, about environmental justice, and about the true impacts of fossil fuel extraction. The executive director of CCJ, Veronica Coptis, was really invested in our experience and making sure we meet our goals for the month. Through her, I was able to learn about nonprofit management and attend meetings with other environmental justice nonprofits - which ultimately helped me define my future career plans."

Term: 2020 IAP period

Housing: Dorm housing provided through Washington & Jefferson College

Payment: $2500 stipend for the IAP period

To apply please email a resume and cover letter on why you want to intern and what you are hoping to learn to heaven@coalfieldjustice.org.
