Gentrification and All Its Vices Panel
The GW Alternative Breaks Community Empowerment and Systemic Inequality presents a panel discussion on exploring the root causes of gentrification and how it manifests and impacts communities in D.C. As students who reside in D.C., it is our responsibility to learn our roles and complicity in the issue. We will learn the importance of policy, activism, and organizing through our featured panelists:
  • Shakeara Mingo- Resource Organizer at ONE DC, whose mission is to exercise political strength to create and preserve racial and economic equity in Shaw and the District. ONE DC’s vision is to build power and advantage for communities of color, the working poor, and other groups of oppressed people through grassroots organizing and leadership development.
  • Shiri Yadlin- Director of Just Homes, whose mission is to mobilize and equip faith communities in DC to live out their calling to biblical justice by meeting the housing needs of the city. Just Homes envisions a city where the injustices of the housing system are rectified and the brokenness of the city is restored so that all those who choose to can dwell and thrive.
  • Dr. Gregory Squires- GWU Professor of Sociology and Public Policy & Public Administration. He is a member of the Fair Housing Task Force of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and the Social Science Advisory Board of the Poverty & Race Research Action Council in Washington, D.C. Dr. Squires has written for several academic journals and other publications including Social Problems, Social Science Quarterly, Urban Affairs Review, Journal of Urban Affairs, The Nation, The American Prospect, New York Times, and Washington Post.
