Excite, also known as Head Start, is a federal program for preschool children from low-income families. It offers preschool children and their families encouragement, learning experiences, a safe and caring environment, health screening, and assistance in community resources. Opportunities to get involved at EXCITE include: assisting staff in a morning or afternoon classroom with a group of 12-19 children; interacting with a child or children in small or large groups as assigned; communicating and playing with children on their physical level; following the lead of the children in conversation by listening and responding to children's conversational topics; assisting with field trips; preparing classroom activities; partnering with a child who is beginning to learn English; assisting with health screenings; and assisting staff in planning for family activities. Various locations are available to volunteer at. There are flexible times available from 8:15-3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday during the school year, and special times open for the second Thursday of each month, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. A regular schedule will be set based on your availability. One half-hour training session is required. There are educational opportunities available for: child development, mental health, health, nutrition and dental, human relations, communications, education, business, leadership, and non-profits.
